7. Abstract of the Forum
Since the beginning of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as well as the previous stage in 2014, international humanitarian laws and fundamental rights have been facing a serious challenge amid the conspicuous reports of atrocities committed by Russian military forces. Mr. Achille Campagna has been at the forefront of efforts to address this situation by assisting Ukrainian victims of these heinous crimes through gathering legal evidence and providing representation at the International Criminal Court (ICC), beside other national and international tribunals. Mr. Campagna, an Italo-San Marinese lawyer, has led teams of international lawyers in investigating alleged atrocities in various Ukrainian cities such as Bucha and Kherson. The information that he and his colleagues have collected on the field points to repeated atrocities carried out by Russian forces, including murder, torture, and rape. These acts form the basis to substantiating the case of genocidal acts, persecution, and extermination. In addition to preparing documentation and communicating with the ICC and other humanitarian courts, Mr. Campagna is also seeking ways to hold those responsible for these atrocious acts by bringing civil lawsuits in European courts to claim compensation, targeting frozen Russian assets abroad. He is willing to share these first-hand experiences and his thoughts on the historical lessons the world should draw from Ukraine. The seminar is open to anyone who is concerned or interested in the current situation in Ukraine, including scholars of international law, peace studies, and other related subjects, as well as ordinary citizens of Hiroshima.
