学生の皆さんへ
研究者のアイデンティティはその人の選ぶ「問い」です。漠然とした関心領域ではなく、十分に特定され、観察可能な事実によって検証できる「問い」を探し出してください。そしてそれは、自分の力量で、一定の時間的制約の中で（たとえば論文提出期限までに）、理論に裏打ちされ、論理的に整合的な方法で回答できなければなりません。そのためには、先行研究はどのように問いを立て、根拠に基づく説得力ある議論を展開してきたのかを確認しましょう。これらのことを念頭におきながら、みなさんが理解を深めたい社会事象について、何が《共時的多様性》と《通時的変化》をもたらしているのかをよく考えてみてください。
次に、自分自身の議論を説得力あるものにするために、相手（論文の読み手、口頭報告の聴き手）の頭の働きを想像してみてください。当然のことながら、誰もが同じ波長で考える訳ではありません。かつて私も指摘されてきたことですが、書き手にとって想像上の読み手の批判的思考力ほど筆者の作業の質を左右するものはありません。
そして最後に、問いを相互に関連づけながら、自分にとって「わかる」と感じられる範囲を広げてください。
平和学研究科にみなさんを迎えて、このような知的探求の醍醐味を共有したいと願っています。

社会人入試をお考えの方へ
平和学研究科では、博士前期課程において社会人特別入試という形で、職業経験を持つものの出願を奨励しています。また、入学後も常勤職を有することになる出願者には、明確な履修計画を持つ限り、追加的な授業料納付を求めることなく標準修業年限を越えて長期的な履修を認める長期履修制度があります。
平和学研究科は、学際的な平和学の学知を身につけた民間の専門的職業人、公務員を志す人材の育成も行っています。それのみならず、社会人経験を活かして、演習等における討議を一段と活性化することを大いに期待します。

To Prospective Students

The identity of a researcher is a question of his or her choice. Rather than searching for an area of vague interest, find out a well-specified and empirically verifiable question you can manage to answer in time, certainly by the deadline for submission, in a theoretically informed, and logically consistent manner. For this purpose, analyze the existing literature and ascertain how previous studies have formulated research questions and have made persuasive arguments based on evidence and data. With these in mind, give serious thought to what has generated variation and change in the social phenomenon about which you are full of enthusiasm in gaining deeper understanding.
Then, to make your own argument more persuasive, imagine how those who are on the other end of academic communication would react to your message, whether spoken or written. Obviously not everyone is on the same wave length as you. As was pointed out to me long ago, nothing but the critical thinking ability of your imagined reader in your mind could more significantly determine the final product quality of your work.
And finally broaden the area of your understanding where you have a firm grasp by connecting related questions together.

To Prospective Students with Work Experience

The Graduate School of Peace Studies encourages those who have professional experience to apply for admission to its MA program through “the Entrance Examination for Applicants with Work Experience.” In addition, our “Long-Term Enrollment Program” allows students with full-time jobs to meet their degree requirement over an extended period, longer than the standard 2 years, without additional tuition fees, as long as they have clear study plans.
The GSPS aims at turning out civil society professionals and civil servants with a full command of interdisciplinary peace studies. Furthermore, the School holds high expectations for those students to make greater contribution, based on their work experience, to classroom discussion.
