大学生の皆さんへMessage to Students
憲法というとどんなイメージをもつでしょうか？条文や単語の丸暗記を強制された過去を思い出すかもしれません。堅苦しい議論との印象を持っているかもしれません。
しかし、人が自らの幸せを求めるならば、力が弱いというだけで泣きをみることが決してないように、法によって強い者そして国家権力に歯止めをかけることが必要です。憲法は、人間一人ひとり、それぞれ＜いのち＞と＜くらし＞が守られ、そして＜自分らしく＞生きることができる社会をつくってゆくための法です。
当たり前のことをあえて申し上げますが、本来、どんな人も生きていることそれ自体に価値があります。しかし、特に近年、若者を含めて、「社会は甘くない」、「お前など役に立たない」「社会に役に立つ人間になれ」などと＜強者の論理＞で切り捨てられて、「死にたくなる」などという気持ちにさえなる人々が後を絶ちません。「社会に役に立つ人間」ではなくて、「人間に役に立つ社会」をいかにつくるかという視点こそが重要です。戦争・武力紛争、差別、貧困、格差社会問題などは、言わば「政治の失敗」として起きる問題です。
そうした社会や政治・経済のあり方をいかにしたら変えられるか、みんなが＜自分らしく＞人生が生きられるような世の中（社会、政治、経済）にするにはどうすればよいのかということを考えるのが、社会科学ないし「憲法」という学問の基本思考です。学問は世の中を変えるためにこそあるのです。世の中を変えるためには世の中をよく知る必要があります。
皆さんとともに常に私も学びたいと思っています。一緒に学ぶ機会があれば幸いです。
What kind of image do you have of the Constitution? You may remember in the past being forced to memorize related technical terms by teachers. You may have the impression that it is too formal a discussion for you to have an opinion about the Constitution.
However, if we insist upon our own happiness, we should not be harmed simply because we are the weak. It is necessary to place appropriate restraints on powerful individuals as well as upon state power through laws. A Constitution is a legal tool to create a society where the rights to life, and rights to maintain minimum standards of a healthy and cultured life are guaranteed, and each person’s individuality is respected.
All life has intrinsic value. However, especially recently, we often feel that “life is not that easy,” “you are worthless,” or "you must become a person who is useful for society." This is the logic of powerful people.
I think that it is important that we don’t have just "people that are useful for society," but instead that we think about how to make "a society that is useful for people." War, discrimination, poverty, the widening social gap are problems that are caused by the "failure of politics."
How should we change the present society, politics and economy, if we are committed to this? What should we do to make a society where each individual is respected? It is a fundamental idea of social science or constitutional law to consider such things. This is the academic theory of how to change the world. We have to understand the world well before we can change it.
