広島平和研究所は、公立大学法人広島市立大学（1994年開学）の附置研究機関として1998年4月1日に設置されました。
1945年8月になぜ核兵器が使用されたのでしょうか。その一方で、その後はなぜ核兵器は使用されなかったのでしょうか。さらに今後も、核兵器は使用されることはないのでしょうか。もちろん、広島の地で取り組むべき平和研究の問題はこれらにとどまるものではありません。核兵器についても、その使用の非人道的帰結や、非戦闘員の犠牲に対する戦後補償、国際社会における軍備管理などに関連してさらに検討を深めるべき課題はほかにもあります。
さらにそもそも平和という概念はどのように定義できるでしょうか。平和とは単に戦争の不在に過ぎないのでしょうか。そして何が平和を脅かし、またどうすれば平和を実現・維持できるのでしょうか。研究スタッフの研究テーマをご覧いただければおわかりになると思いますが、広島平和研究所は、日本における学際的平和研究の拠点として、このように広がりと奥行きを持つ諸課題に取り組んでいます。
広島市立大学は、2019年4月に本研究所の全面的なコミットメントによって大学院平和学研究科修士課程（現・博士前期課程）を新設したうえで、2021年4月には同研究科博士後期課程を開設しました。本研究科の学位プログラムは、平和の崩壊原因と定着条件を総合的に分析できる専門家の養成を通じて国際平和への基盤を築くために新設されたものです。
Message from the Director
The Hiroshima Peace Institute was founded on April 1, 1998 as a research institute affiliated with Hiroshima City University (established in 1994).
Why were nuclear weapons used in August, 1945? On the other hand, why have nuclear weapons stayed unused in conflict since then? And will nuclear weapons never be used again? Certainly, the range of questions to be addressed in the city of Hiroshima are not limited to the above-stated examples. As related to nuclear weapons, other important but still underexamined topics include catastrophic humanitarian consequences of their use, postwar compensations to the suffering of civilians, international arms control and so forth.
Furthermore, how could one define the concept of peace in the first place? Does peace mean no more than the absence of war? And what could constitute threat to the peace and how could the peace be built and maintained? Our institute, as a hub of interdisciplinary peace research in Japan, is tackling this wide variety of research agenda in depth, as you find in the research interests of our researchers.
Hiroshima City University established the Master’s Program in Peace Studies with our full commitment in April 2019, and subsequently the Doctor’s Program in 2021. Our graduate degree programs were launched to lay the groundwork for international peace by turning out experts equipped with comprehensive analytical skills to identify the causes of unravelling peace and conditions of consolidated peace.
