山口県立宇部高等学校1年生の生徒37名が、課題研究活動の一環として来訪されました。講義を担当した吉川元教授は、「なぜ核はなくならないのか」と題して講義を行いました。吉川教授は、戦争の機械化によって戦争が総力戦に、また世界大戦に発展する背景を説明した上で、国際政治の仕組みが勢力均衡システムにある限り、軍拡が進み、また軍事技術を有する大国が武器輸出というビジネスに精を出し続ける限り、核兵器はおろか通常兵器も廃絶できないとの見通しを説明しました。そしてこれまでの平和創造の手立ての中で、安全保障共同体の創造こそ現実的な核兵器および通常兵器の削減の道であると論じました。講義の後、活発な意見交換が行われ、生徒たちは平和学への理解を深めたようでした。（2017年12月14日）
A group of thirty-seven students from Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube Senior High School visited the HPI for their research and study program, and attended in a lecture by Professor Gen Kikkawa. Professor Kikkawa spoke on, “Why We can’t Eliminate Nuclear Weapons.” He discussed the international state system of the balance of power, which is the root cause of arms race. He gave an overview of the history of modern mechanized war that inevitably led to total war and world war. He put special emphasis on arms producing states and the arms trade business that are the main factors inhibiting the path towards a nuclear free world. He concluded by emphasizing the need to establish security based community building to create a lasting and stable peace without nuclear weapons. Following the lecture, they had a lively discussion and students expressed a clear grasp of the important role of peace studies. (Dec. 14, 2017)
