4. 講演の概要
現在、世界には多くの核兵器が存在する。ヒロシマ・ナガサキは決して過去のものではなく、再び起こりうる状況にある。エリン・オハラ・スラヴィック氏は、10年以上にわたり戦争の恐ろしい影響を記録し、無差別空爆の残酷さを表現してきた。“Hiroshima: After Aftermath”は、スラヴィック氏が広島で制作した作品であり、戦争を視覚的に印象付けるとともに、目に見えない放射能を目に見える形で表現するという相容れない逆説的な手法で、それが最も野蛮なものであるということを示すことに挑戦している。今回、氏の作品展“Hiroshima: After Aftermath”が9月17日から10月17日まで広島市中区袋町の旧日本銀行で開催されるにあたり、氏が自身の作品や制作過程を解説し、核戦争やその影響についてどう考えるかを改めて見直す機会を提供した。
5. エリン・オハラ・スラヴィック氏の略歴
1992年にシカゴ美術館付属美術大学にて修士号取得後、1994年より現職。概念的・実験的フォトグラフィ、視覚芸術の共同プロジェクト、ドローイング、ミクストメディア、身体イメージ等を教授。8才の時に父親からカメラを与えられる。幼少期より家族で欧州およびアメリカを広く旅行し、教会や博物館・美術館、あるいは有名な観光スポットから隠れた史跡等さまざまな場所を訪れた経験から、個人と世界との関係についての視覚的探求や表現が始まる。作品の手法は、写真だけでなく、ドローイングやペインティング、インスタレーションやパフォーマンス、ドキュメンタリー画像や刺繍、彫刻など多岐にわたり、その中でフェミニズムや国家、政治的なものとしての個人、家族関係、記憶、非主流の歴史、記念物、世界経済、現代の労働者、旅行・観光写真などを取り上げ、メディアがいかに世界や米軍を、また、武器の輸出、テロへの協力、核拡散など世界中にある「暴力」を正しく、あるいは歪めて描写しているか、そして、自らの制作、授業、活動を通じて、芸術がいかに社会を変えることができるか、ということを探求している。作品は、アメリカ・英国・欧州・カナダ・香港・キューバなど世界中で展示。出版物は『Bomb After Bomb: A Violent Cartography』(2007年）の他、多数。

4. Abstract of the forum
There are a huge number of nuclear weapons in this world. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not past events. They are about today's situation. The exibition "Hiroshima: After Aftermath" is an attempt to reshape how we think about and a protest against nuclear war and the aftermath. For over a decade, trying to record the cruelty of aerial bombardment have been slavick's major concerns. The works at the exhibition visually register warfare and face the irreconcilable paradox of making visible the most barbaric as witness, artist, and viewer.
5. Profile of elin o'Hara slavick
slavick is a Distinguished Term Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she's been teaching conceptual and experimental photography, collaborative visual projects, drawing, mixed media and body imaging since 1994. slavick received her MFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992. When she was eight years old, she was given a camera by her father. While traveling extensively throughout Europe and the United States as a child, slavick visited churches, museums, typical tourist destinations, alternative historical sites, and elsewhere. Perhaps these experiences began her visual explorations and manifestations of the relationship between the individual and the world.
slavick's mixed-media work ranges from photography to drawing, painting, installation, performance, documentary images, embroidery, sculpture and so on. She has explored feminism, body politics, the personal as political, familial relations, memory, alternative histories, memorials, the global economy, contemporary workers, travel/tourist photography, how the media (mis)represents the world, the U.S. military and exported violence, and how art can transform society through her art projects, teaching and activism.
slavick has exhibited her work across the globe including the U.S., England, Europe, Canada, Hong Kong and Cuba. She is the author of Bomb After Bomb: a Violent Cartography (2007).
